Foreign Minister’s Commendation for FY 2024
Mr. Peter Marquez
Head of Space Policy, Amazon Web Services

On August 1, 2024 (Japan Time), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan announced the recipients of the Foreign Minister’s Commendations for FY 2024. Mr. Peter Marquez is among this year’s foreign recipients. He will receive a Commendation in recognition of his contributions to the promotion of space cooperation between Japan and the United States of America.

Mr. Marquez has served as a member of several Japanese and U.S. space policy-related organizations, including the Mansfield Foundation and the Japan Institute for Space and Security, and has supported a mutual understanding of space policy and strategy between the two countries since 2010. As an expert on space policy issues, Mr. Marquez has also participated in many space forums, emphasizing the importance of developing and expanding Japan–U.S. space business relations. Mr. Marquez has been the head of space policy at Amazon Web Services since 2020. To build mutual understanding and connections between the public and private space communities in Japan and the U.S., Mr. Marquez coordinated the U.S. space business delegation at the first public-private dialogue (Track 1.5), held under the Japan–U.S. Comprehensive Dialogue on Space in 2023. Mr. Marquez also served as the Director for Space Policy at the National Space Council during the Bush and Obama Administrations from 2007 to 2010, contributing to the establishment of the Japan–U.S. Comprehensive Dialogue on Space, the cornerstone of today’s Japan–U.S. space cooperation.

Every year, the Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields, in order to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas. The Commendations also aim to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for the activities of the recipients.
